Hey everyone! I finally picked up a Sony RX100 VII for vlogging and travel videos. While the 4K footage looks incredible, I’m really struggling with the internal audio, especially when it’s even slightly windy outside. Since this model finally has a 3.5mm mic jack, I want to take advantage of it! I’m looking for something compact that won't overwhelm the small size of the camera. I’m also a bit confused about mounting since there’s no built-in hot shoe—are you using a specific bracket or cage? My budget is around $150. Any specific shotgun or lavalier mics you’d recommend that balance quality and portability for this setup?

Check out these resources! Basically, you just need a side bracket and a cardioid mic. 1. SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 VII 2467 (~$35): Essential for mounting without blocking the screen.
2. Rode VideoMicro (~$60): Best budget mic for wind.
3. Pro tip: Look up the B&H Explora blog for "compact vlogging setups." In my experience, keeping it light is wayyy safer for that tiny 3.5mm jack anyway. gl!

> I’m looking for something compact that won't overwhelm the small size of the camera. Quick question - are you mostly doing "talking head" style vlogs or just capturing general travel scenery?? It actually matters a lot cuz the RX100 VII's internal preamp can be a bit noisy if you don't pick the right gear. Before I give full advice, here’s a quick comparison of what fits ur $150 budget: 1. Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone (~$60):
Pros: No batteries needed, comes with a great furry windshield for that wind issue. Cons: Cardioid pick-up might grab too much background noise in busy cities, you know? 2. Saramonic Blink 500 B1 Digital Wireless Lavalier System (~$110):
Pros: Literally perfect for clear voice even if you're far from the camera. Cons: More stuff to charge and might look kinda "bulky" mounted on a side bracket. You definitely gotta grab the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 VII 2467 too. I think it's the only way to mount things without blocking the flip screen... anyway, let me know ur main shooting style! gl!

oh man, the RX100 VII is literally AMAZING!! I think ur best bet is: - a tiny Rode shotgun (iirc they're like $60)
- or maybe a Sony lav mic You definately need an L-bracket from brands like SmallRig too. Idk if they still make the exact one I have, but it basically adds a shoe mount to the side. Honestly, it makes the camera wayy easier to grip too! gl!!

Honestly, I am dealing with the exact same headache right now. I have used the RX100 series for years and while the video is legendary, the audio situation is just such a pain to get right. It's frustrating because you want that tiny setup to stay tiny, but the wind basically kills everything. In my experience, here is how my last trip went trying to fix this:

  • I tried a cheap stick-on deadcat first but it peeled off in the humidity after like two days.
  • My first external mic setup actually failed because the cable wasnt secure enough and I didnt realize it had unplugged until I got home.
  • I learned the hard way that if the mounting isnt rock solid, you end up with handling noise thats way worse than the wind. Really glad you brought this up because I'm still trying to find a solution that doesnt make the whole rig feel bulky or unreliable when I'm out in the field. Its a tough balance for sure.
