im honestly so fed up with the audio on my new sony zv-e10 ii like i just spent a fortune on this kit for my big japan trip next thursday and everything i record sounds like its underwater or has this annoying hiss in the background. the built in mic is trash even with that little fluff thing on top and the cheap saramonic i picked up is picking up all the lens motor noise which is just great... literally ruined my whole weekend of test footage and i dont have time to redo everything.

i need something that actually works and i need it fast because im leaving in less than a week. i want something that fits on the hot shoe so i dont have to mess with cables if possible but at this point i just want it to sound professional and not like a tin can. my budget is maybe 200 or 250 max since the camera already cleared out my savings lol. im mostly gonna be vlogging in busy streets in tokyo so it needs to block out some of that crowd noise.

  • is the sony ecm-b10 worth the extra cash for the digital connection?
  • should i just stick to a rode videomic go ii or something similar?
  • do i need a deadcat that actually stays on? the sony one keeps falling off in my bag

if anyone has this camera and actually figured out a way to get clean audio without a huge headache please let me know before i lose my mind...

Since you are leaving for Tokyo so soon, I would suggest focusing on the MI shoe. It saves time. I've used this setup for years and it is more reliable for travel.

  • You might want to consider the Sony ECM-B10 Digital Shotgun Microphone to block crowd noise.
  • Be careful with analog options since they pick up interference in dense cities.
  • Make sure the windscreen clicks or it wont stay on.

Honestly, I've learned that native Sony gear is the safest bet for travel.

tl;dr: audio issues on the Sony ZV-E10 II are the absolute worst... are you mostly doing talking head shots or just capturing the vibe of the city? ugh i honestly had such a bad experience with audio on my last trip too, it really ruins the vibe. reminds me of when my buddy took his gear to a music festival and thought he was all set... he spent like half his budget on this setup and then realized halfway through the first day that he forgot the specific battery type for his receiver. he ended up trying to buy one at a local convenience store but they were totally sold out because of the event. he was so frustrated he just stopped filming and honestly i think he still hasnt edited that footage like two years later. such a bummer when you spend all that cash and it just doesnt work out right. stumbled upon this today and figured i should ask about your filming style... are you mostly vlogging your face or just walking around tokyo?
