Finally got the ZV-E10 II to upgrade my rig and while the internal mic is fine for indoors the wind here in Chicago is killing my audio. I've been shooting street food clips and my logic was the included windscreen would be enough but it really isnt.
I was thinking about the Sony ECM-B10 because of that digital interface but my budget is strictly under $150 after buying the body. I looked at the Rode VideoMicro II but I'm worried about preamp noise if I crank the levels. Anyone found a good balance for this body... maybe something that plays nice with the MI shoe?
Seriously, go wireless! The Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone System is amazing for street food... you can hide it from wind and it fits the MI shoe. Look for a sale, its fantastic!
You might want to consider the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone for the MI shoe. Be careful with Chicago wind; I would suggest a generic furry deadcat to make sure you dont peak.
Like someone mentioned, that low-end rumble is just a total vibe killer. I've had issues with budget mics in the past where the preamp hiss was actually louder than my voice once I leveled everything up in post... super frustrating. If you're really struggling with the Chicago wind, you might want to try a different route. Instead of a shoe mic, maybe grab a Zoom H1n-VP Handy Recorder and a cheap lavalier. You can just keep the recorder in your pocket and sync it later. It avoids the camera's preamps entirely so you dont get that hiss. If you're stuck on having it on-camera, the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+200&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 is a solid alternative to the Rode stuff. It has a built-in shock mount that's actually sturdy and not as floppy. Just keep in mind that no budget mic is gonna be perfect out of the box in heavy wind. I usually end up DIYing an extra layer of craft store fur over the deadcat anyway. It looks goofy but it works way better than the stock stuff. Good luck with the street food clips!
I totally agree that those included windscreens are pretty useless. I had issues with my own setup recently where even a decent cover didnt stop the preamp noise from getting weird when it got breezy. It is honestly so disappointing to get home and hear that low-end rumble all over your footage. Some of these budget options are just not as good as expected when you are actually outdoors.
To add to the point above: Tony is 100% right about that rumble. Its honestly such a vibe killer when you think you got the shot but the audio is basically mush. Unfortunately, I've had issues with setups that just arent as good as expected once you actually start moving.
